How To Tell When You Need a New Home Water Filter
A water filtration system is a great addition to any home, as it provides clean, good-tasting water to the entire household. However, these systems do require some maintenance, including occasional replacement. Here’s how to tell when you need a new home water filter.
Your Water Has an Odor
Water that has a foul odor is a pretty clear sign that your water filter needs to be replaced. You may notice that your water reeks of chlorine, sulfur, or another unpleasant smell. This likely means that your water supply is filled with detrimental chemicals or minerals that your old filter is not able to get rid of.
It Tastes Bad
The same thing is likely true if you notice a decrease in the taste of your water. Bad-tasting water is usually indicative of a greater problem: contamination. If you notice that your water tastes metallic or salty, that’s probably because it’s hard. Another sign of hard water is an increase in the amount of scale left by your water on counters, faucets, and other fixtures.
Water Pressure Is Low
Have you noticed that the water pressure in your home isn’t what it used to be? That could be because one or more of your water filters are dirty or clogged, hindering the flow of water. If this is the case, your filters will need to be cleaned or replaced. It’s important to note that low water pressure can have other sources, such as a leak in your home’s water system. Either way, it’s best to have a plumber come check it out to identify the issue.
Your Water or Filter Is Dirty
If you notice that your water is dirty with bits of debris, floaties, or bits or mold, it’s time to check your filter. If your filter itself appears dirty when you check it, change it right away. Consuming mold or other debris is not only gross, but dangerous—you don’t want that in your drinking water!
Now that you know how to tell when you need a new home water filter, be sure to check your water and filtration system regularly for the signs. Generally, your home water filter should be changed every three to six months; this amount may differ based on the type of filter you have. Premier H2O carries both water filtration systems and reverse osmosis filter cartridges in case you need a replacement.
